Local SEO in a town with several centres

Telford was planned as a set of linked districts rather than one high street. Local search behaves accordingly. A result that looks strong from Wellington can be invisible from Newport.

Why the geography matters here

Google builds local results around three inputs: relevance, distance, and prominence. Distance is measured from wherever the person searching happens to be standing, not from a single town centre point.

In a conventional market town that distinction rarely shows up because everyone is searching from roughly the same place. In Telford, with distinct centres at Wellington, Oakengates, Dawley, Madeley and the town park, plus Newport a few miles out, it shows up constantly.

The practical consequence is that a single map pack position does not exist. Where a business appears depends on where the searcher is. The honest question is which parts of the borough you currently win.

The order of work

What gets done, and why in that order

Fix the profile itself

Primary category, secondary categories, service list, service area, hours, and a description written for a reader rather than stuffed with keywords. This is free and it is the single highest leverage step.

Make the name, address and phone number agree everywhere

Google cross references your details across the web. Inconsistent formats, old addresses and a mobile number on one listing with a landline on another all weaken the confidence signal.

Build the location relevance on your own site

A genuine page about the area you serve, with real detail about where you work and what you do there. Not a thin page repeating the town name twenty times, a tactic Google has discounted for years.

Then measure from more than one point

Checking rank from your own office tells you almost nothing because you are standing next to your own pin. Positions need checking from several points across the borough.

A common mistake

Hiding your address is not a penalty

Many trades believe hiding a home address damages their local ranking. They publish it and take the privacy hit. That is not how a service area profile works.

Google supports service area businesses explicitly and a correctly configured hidden address profile competes normally. What does cause problems is a fake address at a rented mailbox, a policy breach that gets profiles suspended.

What local work is worth

3

listings in a standard map pack MECHANISM

Google shows three local results before the more places link. Fourth position means most searchers never see you without an extra tap.

£0

cost of the profile itself MECHANISM

A Google Business Profile costs nothing to create or maintain. The cost is the time spent configuring it correctly.

£600

per month, retainer floor FIXED

Local work sits inside the retainer rather than being priced separately.

What I will not do

I will not create additional profiles at addresses you do not occupy and I will not add keywords to your business name on the profile. Both are common, both work briefly, and both risk a suspension that takes weeks to appeal.

I also will not solicit reviews on your behalf or write them. Reviews matter. The only defensible way to get them is for you to ask your own customers directly.

Public consultation

Common questions about ranking locally

Why does my business show in the map pack from one part of town and not another?

Google weights proximity heavily for local results and measures distance from the searcher rather than from the town centre. A town with separate centres at Wellington, Oakengates, Dawley and the town park produces genuinely different results a few miles apart.

Does a Google Business Profile help if I have no shopfront?

Yes, using a service area profile with the address hidden. That is the correct setup for a mobile trade or a firm that visits customer sites. Hiding the address does not remove you from local results.

How much does the primary category matter?

More than almost anything else you control on the profile. The primary category decides which searches your profile is even eligible for. A wrong or vague choice quietly caps everything else you do.

Do photos and posts on the profile actually change anything?

They affect whether someone chooses you once you appear, more than whether you appear at all. A profile with current photos and clear opening hours converts a listing view into a call far more often than an empty one.

Is it worth listing in local Shropshire directories?

A small number of genuine ones, yes, mainly so that your name, address and phone number agree everywhere Google finds them. Bulk directory submissions are a waste of money and can create inconsistencies you then have to clean up.

Can one business rank in Telford and in Shrewsbury at the same time?

It can, rarely equally well. Proximity works against you in whichever town you are not based in. The realistic approach is to win the map pack where you are and use ordinary organic pages to reach the other town.
